SAN Resource Center
The San Antonio-Fruitvale Neighborhood of East Oakland is an ethnically and culturally diverse area with a heavy concentration of immigrant business owners and vulnerable populations. To meet the diverse needs of the local community, Lao Family has developed the San Antonio Neighborhood (SAN) Resource Center.
The SAN Resource Center is a place where:
Residents can become job-ready and secure employment through the Affiliate One-Stop Career Center
Local businesses can find quality employees and non-profits can access affordable office space
Residents and entrepreneurs can learn basic financial education that enables them to better manage their money, purchase a home, or start a business
New immigrants and refugees can receive language-appropriate services and attend ESL classes to help them adjust to living in their new home country while also offering a communal gathering space
At-risk youth can participate in education and employment support programs helping them to transition to productive adulthood
The center will create new jobs and encourage business investment in the San Antonio area. There will be shared meeting and conference rooms, high speed internet access, a One-Stop Affiliate Center, and youth and senior centers. The location of the center allows for easy access by public transportation (BART and AC Transit) and by Interstate 880. Free on-site bicycle and vehicle parking is available.
The Center’s redevelopment will be multi-phased and cost approximately $8.5 million. The project will transform a vacant two-story building into a mixed-use, green construction, commercial center featuring 30,000 square feet of affordable office and retail space. Lao Family’s main office has been in operation at the center since early 2009.
