Mayor Jean Quan to address Oakland Youth at 16th Annual Southeast Asian Youth Leadership Conference
OAKLAND, CA- Two hundred diverse Oakland youth will get a chance to meet and hear from Mayor Jean Quan on Friday, June 24th , at the 16th Annual Southeast Asian Youth Leadership Empowerment Conference (SAYLEC) at Lao Family Community Development, Inc. Mayor Quan to address youth as Key Note Speaker at 1PM.
The SAYLEC conference is a youth-led event with the goal of empowering young people to come together, increase their knowledge on youth related issues, and acquire the necessary skills on how to make positive changes for themselves, their families, and their communities.
Each year, the youth select topics for the conference workshops based on what they feel are important. This year’s topics include, Human Trafficking, Healthy Living and Nutrition, Government Budgets and how they affect our community’s health.
The Conference is a part of Lao Family’s Workforce Investment Act Year Round Youth Program, which is funded through the City of Oakland. The goal of this program is to prepare youth for the future with: Work Readiness Skills, Resume and Interview Preparation, Work Experience, Career Development Skills, Youth Leadership Skills, Attainment of High School Diplomas, and Exposure to Post-Secondary Educational Opportunities. In FY 2009-2010, 84% (27 out of 32) of the students graduated from High School with a Diploma. The majority enrolled into 4 year universities.
“We are very excited that Mayor Quan will speak at our conference,” said Frances Fu, a senior at Skyline High, who will be starting as a Freshman at UC San Diego this fall. Frances is one of the youth who is helping plan the event. “Her leadership serves as an inspiration to me as a young woman and a person of color. I hope someday I can have the same level of success that she’s had while helping people at the same time. It’s a real honor to have her.”
