Cal Budget crisis threatens social services, education, infrastructure at time it's needed most.

California budget crisis interactive timeline from the Sacramento BeeThis week Governor Schwarzenegger released the first version of the 2010-2011 state budget, which permanently cuts state worker salaries, deeply reduces Medi-Cal and welfare and numerous other cuts.  All this as California struggles to recover from the worst recession in decades and more Californians are in need of programs.

The state is looking to the federal government to supliment cuts to welfare-to-work programs such as CalWORKs (which is one of Lao Family's biggest programs) which helps families dependent on public benefits get much needed job training and work experience that can lead to regular paid employment.  If this strategy doesn't work, the programs could be slashed or completely illiminated.

Even with the cuts, the budget deficit continues to grow and could reach $25 Billion a year in the near future.

Reasons for the shortfall include reduced tax income due to the recession, high unemployment, and falling property values as well as the state government's poor spending decisions over the past several years.
