Call for assistance

Toe Reh, age 33, is a newly arrived refugee from Burma.  He is currently on life support at Alta Bates Medical Center in Oakland with a heart condition.  His family has decided to take him off life support and is in desperate need of financial assistance.

His three children are all under 13 years old, and one is disabled.  His wife must now raise them alone.

Great thanks to everyone who responded to our call for assistance. 

Toe Reh passed away on August 5, 2010, about 20 minutes after being taken off life support.  The doctor believes the cause of death was some sort of heart defect that he'd had since birth.  Toe Reh had some complaints prior to his death about discomfort and nose bleeds, but there wasn't a Karen-speaking interpretor at the hospital. 

We've raised enough money to cover the funeral costs and will give whatever else is raised as cash assistance to the family. The funeral will be on Sunday or Monday. Thanks to everyone who has helped this family in a very sad time. We will continue to work with Toe Reh's wife to help her as much as we can with learning English and finding a job. There are no doubt hard days ahead. Your support is much appreciated.
