Burmese New Year Celebration- April 30th

In Burma, they celebrate New Years with a joyous three day festival called Maha Thingyan. The three days are filled with prayer, fasting, and fun and falls around mid April. This date, which was chosen according to the lunar calendar and fixed Zodiac System, is a day filled with washing buildings and temples. Additionally, kids and adults play and splash in the excess of water of the day. The water is said to welcome to the heavy rains of the monsoon season and wash away evil spirits.

Come celebrate Maha Thingyan with Oakland's Burmese community!  Everyone is welcome!
